TERJEMAHAN DONGENG KANCIL DAN TIKUS
by Hani Iswuri

Kancil dan Tikus

Di hutan hiduplah dua ekor kancil. Mereka bernama Kanca dan Manggut. Kedua ekor kancil itu bersaudara. Manggut adalah kakak dari Kanca. Sebaliknya, Kanca adalah adik dari Manggut. Walaupun mereka bersaudara, tetapi sifat mereka sangatlah berbeda. Kanca rajin dan baik hati. Sedangkan Manggut pemalas dan suka menjahili teman. Suatu hari Manggut kelaparan. Tetapi Manggut malas mencari makan. Akhirnya Manggut mencuri makanan Kanca. "Ah, mana mungkin dimakan tikus!" kata Kanca. "Iya, kok! Masa sama kakaknya tidak percaya!" jawab Manggut berbohong. Mulanya Kanca tidak percaya dengan omongan Manggut. Tetapi setelah Manggut mengatakannya berkali-kali akhirnya Kanca percaya juga. Kanca memanggil tikus ke rumahnya. "Tikus, apakah kamu mencuri makananku?" tanya Kanca pada tikus. "Ha? Mencuri? Berpikir saja aku belum pernah!" jawab tikus. "Ah, si tikus! Kamu ini membela diri saja! Sudah, Kanca! Dia pasti berbohong," kata Manggut.

The Story Of Mouse-deer Brothers and a Mouse

In the forest there lived a mouse deer and his brother. Their names were Kanca and Manggut. Manggut was older than Kanca. And although they were brothers, their personalities were far different from each other. Kanca was diligent and kind-hearted while Manggut was lazy and mischievous.

One day Manggut was starving. But as he was lazy to get food for himself, he stole it from his younger brother, Kanca. When Kanca asked him where his food was, Manggut said that a mouse had stolen it. “How could a mouse eat my food?!” said Kanca in disbelief. “I’m telling you the truth, you know. How can you not believe your own brother?” Manggut lied to Kanca. At first, Kanca did not believe in what his brother said, but, since Manggut kept on convicing him, Kanca began to believe it anyway.
Then Kanca called the mouse over to his house. “Did you steal my food?” Kanca asked the mouse. “What?! Steal your food, huh? I don’t even have the slightest idea to do so!” the mouse defended himself. “Tsk! Stop defending yourself, mouse. Kanca, I think this mouse has just lied to us!” said Manggut. “Alright! To make it up, gather some food for me from accross the river, ok?! I just gathered some food from there too.” Kanca concluded.
The mouse then made his way to the bank. He used a canoe to go accross the river. The truth was the mouse knew that Manggut was the one who stole Kanca’s food.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the river, Manggut was crossing the river in a hurry. He wanted to set a trap for the mouse. When the mouse was about to arrive accross the river, he saw a trap. He believed that it was Manggut’s doing. Suddenly, the mouse got an idea. He pretended to get drawn in the river. “AAACK! HELP.. Help me Manggut!” the mouse shouted. Hearing that, Manggut quickly went to help the mouse. The mouse wanted Manggut to come along with him to the riverside. Manggut couldn’t do anything but came along with the mouse.
Once they arrived at the riverside, the mouse asked Manggut to accompany him gathering the food. Manggut wasn’t paying much attention and he fell for his own trap. Manggut was feeling guilty for his bad behaviours and swore that he would never do that again.
